Driving in Japan

Ok, I lived in Tokyo for 2.5 years, and every day, I was in fear of getting hit by a driver. While in America, yellow means “It’s almost red so slow down”, in Japan, it seems to mean “Plow through that intersection!” Literally daily I would see people blow through red lights. And don’t even get me STARTED on taxi drivers!!! The only drivers I was extremely impressed by were bus drivers. They’d navigate narrow streets and other terrible drivers in their big vehicles with so much grace and attention. I loved them. But as for everyone else, no fucking way.

Japanese people themselves have often told me, too, that American drivers are much more courteous than Japanese drivers.
