Fun Japanese Bento Lunches
Let’s face it – a lot of Japanese kids are spoiled. It’s not that their parents buy them whatever they want, it’s the doting moms who make bento (box) lunches like these:
The bear below is rice with fish sausage limbs and ears, nori (seaweed) eyes, and a ham mouth.
This cat is made out of potato salad wrapped in ham with carrot and onion facial features.
I am not sure what the monster is made out of, but he has cool ham lips and limbs.
These guys are having a party in inari sushi:
The flesh of these guys is likely croquettes (aka “korokke”: breaded mashed potatoes deep fried) or fried fish. You can probably guess most of the trimmings (cheese, radish, etc.) with a teddy bear made of out of nori.
Japanese moms make sandwiches too:
The black keys here are made from konbu seaweed with carrot music notes.
Lovin’ the chicks (those little eggs are quail eggs):

My mom never made these for me, therefore she didn’t love me.
I said to my husband “I shall make lunch boxes like these for our lunch” He said “it would take ages!” He’s not enthusiastic.
Amazing! This is yet another reason I love the Japanese, and want to move to Japan one day. Awsome!
Where do you get the tools to carve!
I’m guessing the 3rd sandwich was cut out with a cookie cutter for gingerbread men.
These are soooo cute. But it’s not for everyday lunch is it? Where do they find the time?
My mom never made these for me too………!
You can get a lot of cutouts for bento fun boxes at your local Asian food stores. I found a ton of them for my kids there and they love them! You can also find them rather cheap on ebay if you know where to look.
